Julius Shulman Kappe Residence (Exterior with Jaguar Mark 2), 1968
Completed in 1967, the Kappe Residence is a masterwork of "canyon vernacular" modernism. Shulman’s photography emphasizes the home’s dramatic system of six concrete towers and laminated fir beams, which allow the structure to bridge over a steep hillside and natural springs.

Julius Shulman Interior View of the Kappe Residence, 1968
This view captures Ray Kappe’s innovative use of "staggered levels." Shulman used a wide-angle perspective to illustrate how the house functions without traditional walls, using varying floor elevations and redwood trellises to define separate living and studio spaces while maintaining a singular, open volume.
